ANNUAL POULTRY SCIENCE ASSOCIATION MEETING TO EXPLORE WAYS TO FURTHER STRENGTHEN THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ACADEMIA AND INDUSTRY

PSA 2009 Annual Meeting Symposia Announced

Meeting to be Hosted by North Carolina State University, July 20-23

SAVOY, IL (February 11, 2009) – The Poultry Science Association (PSA) today announced the theme and symposia topics for its 2009 annual meeting. The meeting will take place July 20-23 and will be hosted by North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The theme of PSA's 2009 Annual Meeting is "The University and Industry Connection: Building Bridges for our Future." Six symposia, all touching on the forward-looking theme of the meeting, are scheduled.

"In 2008, PSA celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding, and we rightly took time to reflect on what PSA and poultry scientists have accomplished, in terms of basic research and its application to other research areas and to industry. This year, as we take our early steps toward a second centennial, our focus will be on keeping the relationship between academia and industry strong and exploring ideas for deepening it even further," said PSA's president, Michael Lacy, Ph.D.

"Last year's meeting in Niagara Falls was well attended, with more than 700 participants, including a large international contingent. We are looking to an equally successful meeting in July," added Lacy.

Keynote

The keynote symposium is Tomorrow's Poultry: Genomics, Physiology and Well-Being. It will feature 10 speakers who will address these key areas of poultry research, all of which have direct implications for industry and its ability to meet the challenge of producing birds economically and profitably while at the same time addressing their welfare needs and improving their overall well-being in the production environment.

The keynote will be co-chaired by Dr. G. R. Huff, USDA/ARS, and Dr. S.E. Aggrey of the University of Georgia.

Other Symposia

In addition to the keynote, the following five symposia are scheduled:

Informal Nutrition: Connecting the Discoveries Now and Later

The six presentations in this symposium focus on a variety of practical applications relating to nutrition and other environmental factors in the production environment, such as lighting, direct-fed microbials, energy restriction, and dietary modifiers. Practical applications relating to lessons learned from immunity-related research will also be discussed.

Dr. M. Sifri, Archer Daniels Midland Alliance Nutrition, Inc., will chair the symposium.

Global Views of New Agriculture: Food, Energy, and the Environment

Global Views of New Agriculture will feature presentations covering a broad range of topics of current interest, including the ethanol debate, rising food prices, transgenics and food production, and how fundamental agricultural research will help to address these challenges.

Global Views will be chaired by Dr. S. L. Pardue of North Carolina State University.

National Poultry Extension Workshop: What is Needed to Improve University and Industry Collaboration

The extension symposium features presentations and discussion by members of three panels focusing on university and industry collaboration. Panel members consist of industry representatives from a variety of companies, who will discuss collaboration as it relates to research, teaching and extension. Poultry science students from Auburn University, Delaware State University, University of Georgia, University of Arkansas and Texas A&M University, will participate in summarizing the panel discussions.

Chairing the National Poultry Extension Workshop will be Dr. C.D. Coufal, Texas A&M University.

World's Poultry Science Association Lecture

The World Poultry Science Association (WPSA) Lecture, "The Private Sector and GMO's: Current Realities and Near Term Objectives," will be delivered by Mr. G. C. Weigel, BASF, Research Triangle Park, N.C.

The WPSA Lecture will be chaired by Dr. R. E. Buresh of Novus International, Inc.

Student Workshop: The Do's and Don'ts of Writing Pubs

This workshop will provide students with helpful tips for preparing and submitting publishable-quality papers to scientific journals, extension, and popular and trade press publications. It will also include a session on technical editing.

Do's and Don'ts will be chaired by Dr. C. G. Scanes, University of Wisconsin.
