THE POULTRY SCIENCE ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES SYMPOSIA TOPICS FOR ITS 2008 CENTENNIAL MEETING

Symposia Range from Prospects for Organic Poultry to Avian Influenza – and Include a Look at Landmark Contributions to Poultry Science over the Past 100 Years

SAVOY, IL (March 4, 2008) – The Poultry Science Association (PSA) has announced the symposia topics for its Centennial meeting this July. The meeting is scheduled for July 20-23, 2008, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.

Seven symposia are scheduled for the Centennial including a keynote focused on avian influenza, how it spreads, its potential impact and how it has already affected the global marketing of poultry products. Dr. Ilaria Capua, head of the Virology Department at Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie, Padova, Italy, will give the AI symposium's keynote address, "AI Infection in Animals – a Challenge and Opportunity for the Veterinary Profession?"

Other symposia will address issues ranging from how best to use multimedia educational tools in poultry and egg processing initiatives to whether PSE syndrome – for pale, soft, exudative meat, a condition first described in pigs – exists in chickens and turkeys, a question that has divided the community of poultry meat quality scientists in the U.S. and the E.U. for the last decade.

Landmark Contributions

Of special note will be a symposium entitled "Landmark Contributions from the First 100 Years of Poultry Science," focused on identifying the most influential research areas and contributions to poultry science over that period.

"This year's annual meeting marks PSA's 100th year as an organization, and the range of topics to be covered bear witness to the vitality, diversity and influence of poultry science research. We will be drawing attention to the impact poultry science and poultry scientists have had on fundamental research and the poultry industry over the last century, and we will be identifying up to 10 landmark papers whose influence on research and industry practices can still be felt today. But we will also be keenly focused on current-day challenges and questions, including how best to address threats, such as AI, and to anticipate research needs for the future, such as those associated with the growing popularity of organic poultry and egg products," said PSA President John B. Carey, Ph.D.

Scheduled Symposia

The following symposia are scheduled for PSA's 2008 Centennial Meeting:

  • Avian Influenza: Vectors, Vaccines, Public Health, and Product Marketability (Keynote)
  • Current and Future Prospects for Natural and Organic Poultry
  • Informal Nutrition
  • National Extension Workshop
  • Landmark Contributions from the First 100 Years of Poultry Science
  • PSE Syndrome in Poultry – Myth or Reality?
  • Use of Multimedia Educational Tools in Poultry and Egg Processing Initiatives for Teaching, Extension and Outreach
