THE POULTRY SCIENCE ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES AWARDS, NEW LEADERSHIP AT JOINT ANNUAL MEETING IN SAN ANTONIO

SAVOY, IL (August 13, 2007) – The Poultry Science Association (PSA) announced more than 20 awards, including the induction of four PSA Fellows, at a July 11 awards banquet at PSA's 2007 Joint Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas. The banquet was one of the highlights of PSA's week-long annual meeting, held July 8 – 12 in San Antonio, Texas.

PSA also announced its new leadership roster for the upcoming year.

PSA is a global scientific organization of more than 3,500 scientists and educators that serves the poultry industry (and related industries) by promoting the discovery and dissemination of knowledge generated by poultry research.

New PSA Leadership

Awards Banquet

“PSA's 2007 year's Joint Annual Meeting gave us the opportunity to recognize some of the finest research being conducted in poultry and egg science, and related fields, and also to call special attention to those whose life-long contributions have had a major impact on research and the industry,” said new PSA President Dr. John B. Carey.

Newly Elected Fellows of the Poultry Science Association

Each year PSA may select no more than five members as Fellows for their contributions to the field of poultry science. This is the highest honor that PSA can bestow. This year's new Fellows of the Poultry Science Association were:

  • Mary Beck, Ph.D. – Professor, Dept. of Animal Science, Univ. of Nebraska – Lincoln. The scientific framework for Dr. Beck's research has focused on physiological responses of birds to environmental stressors and stimuli. Dr. Beck is the author and contributor of 50 refereed journal articles and the recent recipient of a highly competitive $350,000 USDA NRI grant for research on hen welfare.
  • Henry Classen, Ph.D. – Professor and Head, Dept. of Animal and Poultry Science, University of Saskatchewan, Canada. His research has centered on poultry nutrition and animal welfare issues. Dr. Classen is author or co-author of more than 100 scientific publications; he has delivered more than 100 invited lectures in the U.S. and abroad.
  • Richard D. Reynnells, Ph.D. – National Program Leader for Animal Production Systems, USDA's Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service (CREES). As an extension specialist at the Univ. of Georgia, Dr. Reynnells focused on all phases of broiler and commercial layer and game bird production. His current activities at CREES relate primarily to animal welfare and environmental issues.
  • Arthur J. Maurer, Ph.D. [Posthumous] – Former Professor, Depts. of Poultry Science and Food Science, Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Maurer's major research area was in poultry products technology. A supervisor of 9 MS and 11 Ph.D. students, Dr. Maurer was the author or co-author of 57 scientific papers, and was an invited lecturer to more than a dozen countries.

Awards and Honors

  • Gene Ahlborn, Ph.D. – American Egg Board Research Award. Dr. Ahlborn is currently serving as a cooperative postdoctorate with the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Dept. of Molecular Biomedical Sciences at North Carolina State University.
  • Roselina Angel, Ph.D. – American Feed Industry Association Poultry Nutrition Research Award. Formerly with Purina Mills Inc., Dr. Angel is a professor in the Dept. of Animal and Avian Sciences at the Univ. of Maryland. She was the 2006 recipient of the National Chicken Council Broiler Research Award.
  • Hyun Lillehoj, Ph.D. – Embrex Fundamental Science Award. Dr. Hyun is a former staff fellow at the Laboratory of Immunology, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIH). In 1984 she was recruited by the USDA-ARS at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center.
  • Sheila E. Scheideler, Ph.D. – Helene Cecil Leadership Award. Ms. Scheideler, a poultry nutritionist at the University of Nebraska, has held numerous leadership positions at PSA over the past 16 years, including section and associate editor of Poultry Science and as a member of PSA's Board of Directors.
  • Ramesh Ramachandran, Ph.D. – Hy-Line International Research Award. Dr. Ramachandran is an assistant professor in the Dept. of Poultry Science at Pennsylvania State University, University Park.
  • Joe Moritz, Ph.D. – Land O'Lakes/Purina Mills Teaching Award. Dr. Moritz is a professor in the Division of Animal and Veterinary Sciences at West Virginia University.
  • Layi Adeola, Ph.D. – Maple Leaf Farms Duck Research Award. Dr. Adeola is a professor of animal science in the Dept. of Animal Sciences at Purdue University, which he joined in 1991.
  • Michelle J. Jendral – Maurice Stein Fellowship Award. Ms. Jendral is a doctoral student in the Dept. of Poultry Science at the University of Alberta.
  • Susan J. Lamont, Ph.D. – Merck Award for Achievement in Poultry Science. Dr. Lamont is the C.F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in Agriculture, Dept. of Animal Science, Iowa State University.
  • Mark Berrang, Ph.D. – National Chicken Council Broiler Research Award. Dr. Berrang is a senior scientist and poultry food safety microbiologist at the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS).
  • George “Bud” Malone – Phibro Extension Award. Mr. Malone is an extension poultry specialist at the University of Delaware, where he has served for 32 years.
  • Kenneth N. May, Ph.D. – Merial Distinguished Poultry Industry Career Award. Dr. May, the first recipient of this award, was a professor in the Departments of Poultry Science and Food Science at the Univ. of Georgia, and in the Dept. of Poultry Science at Mississippi State University, before joining (in 1970) Holly Farms Poultry Industries, from which he retired in 1989 as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
  • Gary L. Cromwell, Ph.D. – FASS-AFIA New Frontiers in Animal Nutrition Award. Dr. Cromwell is a professor in the Dept. of Animal and Food Sciences, University of Kentucky, where he has served since 1967.
  • Brian Fairchild, Ph.D. – PSA Early Achievement Award in Extension. Dr. Fairchild is an assistant professor with a primary extension appointment in the Dept. of Poultry Science at the University of Georgia.
  • Alejandro Corzo, Ph.D. – PSA Early Achievement Award for Research. Dr. Corzo is an assistant research professor in the Dept. of Poultry Science at Mississippi State University.
  • Amy Batal, Ph.D. – PSA Early Achievement Award for Teaching. Dr. Batal is a member of the Dept. of Poultry Science at the University of Georgia.
  • Chet W. Utterback – Tyson Food Support Personnel Award. Mr. Utterback works in a variety of capacities with poultry researchers and educators at the University of Illinois.
  • Dept. of Poultry Science, Univ. of Georgia – PSA Student Recruitment Award.

Student Research Awards

  • Erin Hoeri Leone – Alltech Student Research Manuscript Award. Ms. Leone is completing her doctoral work in the Dept. of Animal and Avian Sciences at the University of Maryland.

Centennial Meeting

The 2008 PSA Annual Meeting, which will mark the 100th year of PSA, will be held in Niagara Falls, Ontario, July 20-23, at the Sheraton on the Falls Hotel and Convention Center.
