Daniel Eyre, Pradeep Chaudhary Receive 2025 Andrew F. Giesen III Poultry Science Undergraduate Internship Award

The Poultry Science Association (PSA) has selected Daniel Eyre of Pennsylvania State University and Pradeep Chaudhary of Bangladesh Agricultural University as the 2025 recipients of the Andrew F. Giesen III Poultry Science Undergraduate Internship Award.

The award, established in 2014 through donations from Dr. Giesen’s family, friends, and Novus International Inc., honors his many contributions to the poultry industry. It provides recipients with assistance for travel, room and board, and other expenses incurred during an internship directly related to poultry science or the poultry industry.

"The Giesen Award commemorates a true leader whose contributions shaped poultry science nationally and internationally," said PSA President, Martin Zuidhof. "By providing internship support, this award allows students like Daniel and Pradeep to gain real-world experience that is critical to their development as future industry leaders.”

Daniel Eyre is a junior at Penn State majoring in Animal Science with minors in Poultry and Avian Science and Agribusiness Management. He got his start in agriculture through 4-H, raising and showing chickens, pigs, and rabbits. He began his college career at SUNY Cobleskill before transferring to Penn State, where he's actively involved in poultry judging, the Poultry Science Club, Meat Science Club, and Dairy Science Club. Following graduation, Eyre plans to pursue a career in live or processing operations, combining his hands-on experience and leadership with a passion for poultry and livestock.

This summer, Eyre will intern with Melhorn Sales Service & Trucking Company, a Pennsylvania-based company specializing in live poultry logistics and handling.

“Through this internship, I hope to gain valuable insights that will support my future in the poultry industry,” said Eyre. “I’m especially interested in learning more about the servicing and logistical side of the business. These experiences will give me a broader understanding of how the industry operates beyond raising birds and help me become a more well-rounded, versatile professional.”

The second recipient, Pradeep Chaudhary, is pursuing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at Bangladesh Agricultural University, where his academic journey encompasses practical experiences in animal healthcare and veterinary services as well as research initiatives focused on improving animal welfare and advancing veterinary science.

Chaudhary holds a diploma in Animal Science from Rapti Technical School and brings a versatile background that includes veterinary hospital work, leading animal health campaigns, and contributing to UKAID-supported projects focused on animal health and food security.

He is also active in research, with published work on dietary fiber and animal health and ongoing studies on antibiotic-resistant E. coli in poultry. An active member of the Poultry Science Association and the LEO Club, he is committed to collaborative and community-driven approaches in veterinary science.

Chaudhary said his internship with Shikhar Bird Breeding Nepal PVT. LTD. will provide practical knowledge and tools to help him achieve his long-term goal of contributing to the sustainable growth of the global poultry industry.

PSA’s scholarship cycle opens every October. Students are encouraged to subscribe to PSA emails to get the latest updates on available opportunities. To subscribe, visit the PSA website here: https://poultryscience.org/about/student-resources/the-hatchery.
