Nominating Colleagues for Awards with PSA

All award nominations are to be made through the PSA Awards Site. All award nominations are accepted from November 15th to March 1st, annually. Fellow of the Poultry Science Association is the only nominated award accepting nominations outside of this standard timeframe. Nominations for Fellows are accepted from August 1st to November 1st, annually.

Fellow of the Poultry Science Association

The distinction of Fellow is the highest award bestowed by the Poultry Science Association and is granted for professional distinction and contributions to the field of poultry science and service to the Poultry Science Association.

Eligibility to Receive this Award

  • Must be a PSA Member
  • Cannot have previously been named a Fellow of PSA
  • A body of Fellows shall be chosen from the Professional, active prior to death, or the Emeritus membership of the Association. The title Fellow shall be granted for professional distinction and contributions to the field of poultry science and service to the Poultry Science Association.

  • Suggested Guidelines Adopted by the PSA Board of Directors (July 2012) 
    The designation of "Fellow" is given in acknowledgement of significant service to the Poultry Science Association (PSA) during the course of a distinguished career devoted to poultry research, teaching, extension, administration or the poultry industry:
    • Made poultry science and membership in PSA a career choice
    • Demonstrated significant career contributions to activities sponsored by PSA
      • Journal review and/or editorship
      • Annual meeting implementation
      • Association governance through Board/Committee service or as an employee
    • Demonstrated dedication to the advancement of the poultry enterprise
      • Recognized academic excellence in teaching, research, or extension
      • Industry leader and/or liaison to academic colleagues

Professional Awards

Purpose of this Award

To increase the interest in research pertaining to all things related to eggs. This could include areas related to egg production, safety, product quality, or egg science technology. Committee may choose no awardee if none are deemed worthy.

Eligibility to Receive this Award

  • Must be a PSA Member
  • Published Manuscript in any scientific journal will be accepted. Cannot be a research note or a review article
  • Must not have won the award in the last 5 years
  • Must be affiliated with a North American (Canada, United States, or Mexico) based research institution or organization.

Nomination Criteria Required to Submit

  • Basic Contact Information (Name, Email, Company)
  • Official Nomination Letter (Indicating significance/impact of research)
  • Copy of the manuscript the nomination is based on

Purpose of this Award

To recognize distinctive work demonstrating sound research in poultry nutrition in the last 10 years. The committee may choose no awardee if none are deemed worthy.

Eligibility to Receive this Award

  • Must be a PSA Member
  • Has not received the award previously
  • Nominee’s significant publications must have been done at public, nonprofit institutions, hospitals, or similar organizations. Recipient must be affiliated with one of the institutions where significant research was conducted at the time of nomination
  • Research must be in the field of poultry nutrition and have been published within the last ten (10) years
  • Review articles will not be considered
  • Must be a resident of North America (Canada, United States, or Mexico).

Purpose of this Award

To stimulate interest in documenting and recording historical information regarding the poultry industry development, to preserve artifacts and other items of historical interest to the poultry industry, and to encourage the publication of recorded historical information in papers, books, etc.

Eligibility to Receive this Award

  • Does Not Need to be a PSA Member
  • Cannot have already received the award
  • Has several sustained contributions to the preservation of historical poultry information and artifacts. Cannot be a single paper.

  • Summary Statement about the contributions the individual has made in preserving or recording historical information. This should also include any copies, photos, or documentation of preserved artifacts placed in museums.

Purpose of this Award

This award is given to stimulate and reward research in the field of poultry (chicken, turkeys and eggs) pre- and post-harvest food safety. Nominee’s research should exhibit a sustained impact on decreasing pathogenic organisms in pre- and post-harvest situations.

Eligibility to Receive this Award

  • Must be a PSA Member
  • Cannot have previously received the award
  • The award is preferably given to one individual; however, it may be given to coworkers if deemed advisable by the selection committee.
  • Eligibility is limited to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of live poultry food safety poultry and/or egg products technology. These contributions must be documented through publications in peer-reviewed recognized journals; in state, provincial, or federal publications; in patents; or in other forms deemed appropriate by the selection committee.
  • Significant research work published or other documented accomplishments during the 10 preceding calendar years will be considered in selecting the recipient of the award.
  • Unpublished theses and dissertations are not eligible.

Purpose of this Award

To recognize distinctive contributions to poultry science advancement, covering a period of not more than seven years preceding the annual award.

Eligibility to Receive this Award

  • Must be a PSA Member
  • Nominee’s contributions and achievements to the field of poultry science research must be within the last 7 years
  • Two individuals may be nominated together as long as their work has been closely coordinated.
  • Nominees must reside in Canada, Mexico, or the United States
  • Cannot have previously received this award (That includes the past titles of this award: Merck Award, CPC International Award, and the Borden Award)
  • Nominee’s contributions to poultry research must have been published in recognized journals or state, provincial, or federal publications
  • Nomination cannot be made for a single paper but is to be made for exceptional accomplishments during the last 7 years

Purpose of this Award

To stimulate and reward research with ducks and improve the knowledge base of science as applied to commercial duck production.

Eligibility to Receive this Award

  • Must be a PSA Member
  • Nominee must have conducted research in or directly related to commercial duck production in the last ten (10) years

  • Coworkers may receive the award together if deemed acceptable by the selection committee

Purpose of this Award

To recognize distinctive research work that has a strong economic impact on the broiler industry, primarily on the economic influence the work has had or will have on the industry.

Eligibility to Receive this Award

  • Must be a PSA Member
  • Research must have been published in the last five (5) years and have had a strong economic impact on the broiler industry
  • Past recipients are not eligible for this award
  • Only research done at public, nonprofit, institutions or similar organizations will be considered
  • Individuals or teams can be nominated for this award
  • International nominations are welcomed

Purpose of this Award

To recognize the outstanding record of turkey research published in the last six years.

Eligibility to Receive this Award

  • Research must have been with turkeys in either: economics, food technology, genetics, merchandising, pathology, physiology, and/or nutrition

Purpose of this Award

To recognize that excellence in teaching is basic to the future welfare of the poultry industry and to aid continued professional improvement through travel, study, and other means.

    • Emphasis on quality not quantity of teaching

Purpose of this Award

To recognize PSA members for conducting an outstanding program of work in the area of poultry extension and outreach during the five-year period prior to the award year.

Eligibility to Receive this Award

  • Must be a PSA Member
  • Past recipients are eligible to receive this award unlimited times
  • Nominee must be employed by a nonprofit organization and their role must have devoted at least 30% annual of official work time to extension activities during the 5-year period which the award recognizes
  • Nominee must have been a poultry extension worker on the last working day of the last calendar year for which the award is being made. Workers who were on official leave the previous year are eligible.

Nomination Criteria Required to Submit

    • Usefulness and timeliness of materials in serving the needs of the poultry industry
    • Evidence of adoption of improved practices and their durability as well as originality and stimulation of interest

    • Evidence of development or implementation of training programs for industry as well as other extension workers
    • Implementation of new information and industry problem solving programs

Purpose of this Award

To recognize original research on poultry welfare in any discipline that has been published in the last five years. Research on poultry welfare will be defined as research that 1) evaluates indicators of welfare, such as those related to fear, pain, or stress; 2) evaluates management practices that can be applied to the laboratory use or commercial production of poultry to improve welfare; and/or 3) evaluates or develops procedures intended to alleviate or minimize poultry welfare problems.

Eligibility to Receive this Award

  • Must be a PSA Member
  • Original research on poultry welfare in any discipline that must have been done in the past five (5) years

Purpose of this Award & Background

The James H. Denton Distinguished Service Award specifically recognizes and focuses on a pattern of significant, continuous, dedicated contributions by an individual to the success, well-being and advancement of the Poultry Science Association and/or PSA Foundation. Recipients of the James H. Denton Distinguished Service Award are long-time Association members who have clearly and substantially given of themselves in the work of the Association and/or Foundation, having significantly furthered the purpose for which it was founded. This award should not be confused with recognition as a Poultry Science Association Fellow.

WHEREAS, Dr. James H Denton served as the inaugural Chairman of the Poultry Science Association Foundation Board of Trustees, and as such, was instrumental in successfully launching the Foundation through the development of the Foundation’s Mission, Vision, Policies and Procedures and fund-raising strategies; and,


WHEREAS, Dr. Denton has served on the PSA Foundation Board of Trustees for ¬¬¬¬more than 15 years as member or ex officio member, Board Chairman or Executive Director; and,


WHEREAS, Dr. Denton served as the first PSA Foundation Executive Director, and during his tenure, has worked tirelessly to raise capital to fund more than seven student fellowships, scholarships and internship programs through the Foundation, has secured funding from more than 10 corporate sponsors, and has been responsible for increasing the net assets of the Foundation nearly 15-fold to more than $1.7 million; and,


WHEREAS, Dr. Denton, in all of his roles in the Foundation, has been relentless in his efforts to provide financial resources to support the Foundation’s goals, but especially the funding for student initiatives.  Dr. Denton has selflessly provided his time and extensive talents to advance the mission and vision of the Foundation through his fund-raising efforts. 


THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Poultry Science Association Foundation establish The James H. Denton Distinguished Service Award in honor and recognition of Dr. Denton’s consistent, exceptional and meritorious service to the PSA Foundation; and,


FURTHER RESOLVED that The James H. Denton Distinguished Service Award be funded through an endowment of the Foundation created specifically for this purpose.

Eligibility to Receive this Award

  • Must be a PSA Member and have been a member in good standing for a consecutive 8 years or more.
  • Cannot have previously received the award.
  • Nominees must be living.
  • Cannot be serving on the PSA Board of Directors or on the PSA Foundation Committee at the time of nomination. Former members of the Board of Directors and the PSA Foundation Committee are eligible to receive the award one year after the individual has left the respective position.

Purpose of this Award

To acknowledge the contributions by support personnel and to recognize outstanding support of research, extension, or teaching programs in poultry science.

Eligibility to Receive this Award

  • Does Not Need to be a PSA Member
  • Nominee must be in a support staff role in poultry research, extension, or teaching (this could include farm worker, laboratory technician, extension assistant, etc.)

Nomination Criteria Required to Submit

  • Nomination Letter (Maximum of three (3) pages)
  • Resume/CV (Maximum of one (1) page)
  • Nominee’s Job Description

Purpose of this Award

To recognize distinctive, outstanding contributions by an industry leader based upon a broad, even nonscientific, contribution to the poultry industry.

Eligibility to Receive this Award

  • Must be a PSA Member.
  • Nominee must be living at the time of nomination.
  • Nominees must be employed in the poultry industry. Nominations for individuals employed in academia or government will not be considered.
  • Nonscientific individuals who are employed in and have contributed to the poultry industry may be nominated.
  • Previous recipients are not eligible.
  • Nominee must reside in North America (Canada, United States, or Mexico).

Student Awards

Purpose of this Award

To recognize graduate students for the presentation and publication as senior author of an outstanding research manuscript in Poultry Science or The Journal of Applied Poultry Research. 

Eligibility to receive this Award

  • Must be a PSA Member
  • Must have received a Certificate of Excellence from the Student Competition at the PSA Annual Meeting within the last two years
  • Manuscript must have been published in or submitted to Poultry Science® or The Journal of Applied Poultry Research. Manuscript must be deemed acceptable for publication by the Editor-in-Chief prior to the committee’s final decision

Purpose of this Award

To recognize graduate students whose training and research in applied poultry sciences may lead to improvements in efficiency and profitability of the egg industry; particularly research that has the potential to have a positive financial impact on the egg industry.

Eligibility to receive this Award

  • Must be a PSA Member
  • Students conducting research at an institution in the United States, Canada, or Mexico
  • Graduate Students (full or part time)
  • Nominees must be majoring in an area of poultry science in a formally approved program of study within an animal or poultry science department. There must be either one (1) year of master’s degree course credits or two (2) years doctoral degree course credits related to general animal sciences, with emphasis specifically in poultry science in a field such as veterinary science or medicine, animal welfare and well-being, food science, food engineering, agricultural engineering, agricultural economics, or business/agribusiness within program of study.

  • Official Nomination Letter (Maximum two (2) pages) including:
    • Background/biography of the nominee
    • Description of the research conducted / in progress with an emphasis on the contribution to profitability and/or efficiency of the poultry/egg industry
