Broiler industry experts and researchers to discuss myopathy issues and remedies at upcoming PSA Annual Meeting

The Poultry Science Association (PSA) is welcoming world-leading researchers and industry experts for an in-depth look at myopathies in fast-growing broilers. Their work will be featured on July 11, 2023, at a PSA Annual Meeting all-day symposium titled “Myopathies in Broilers: Supply chain approach to provide answers/solutions to challenges of raising fast growing broilers.”

This symposium is part of the 2023 PSA Annual Meeting, to be held July 10–13 in Philadelphia, PA, at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. Early Registration ends Apr. 30, and attendees could save up to $250 by registering during the Early Bird period. Rates will increase May 1. More symposium information here

Myopathies are problems with muscle development and growth, called myopathies, cost the broiler industry more than $1 million each year. Myopathies such as woody breast can affect the appearance and texture of chicken products—which affects consumer preferences and the overall food supply chain.

"The Association is excited to incorporate this important topic to the 2023 Annual Meeting's programming,” says PSA spokesperson Sam Shafer. “We believe that all poultry scientists will enjoy and benefit from this presentation, especially those working in poultry processing and food safety."

The July 11 symposium will be chaired by Shai Barbut, University of Guelph. The symposium speakers are:

  • Massimiliano Petracci, University of Bologna, Italy
  • Casey M. Owens, University of Arkansas
  • Randolph D. Mitchell, Perdue Farms Inc.
  • Richard Bailey, Aviagen Ltd., United Kingdom
  • Sandra G. Velleman, Ohio State University
  • David E. Gerrard, Virginia Tech University
  • Parker Hall, Perdue Farms Inc.
  • Craig Bacon, Simmons Foods
  • Abbie Cuny, Chick-fil-A Inc.
