Student of the Year Award

The purpose of this award is to recognize an exceptional PSA student member for their contributions over the past year.

Applications for Student of the Year through the PSA Hatchery are now being accepted. The purpose of this award is to highlight service to PSA by student members in the time period of July 2023 to July 2024 (between PSA annual meetings). The recipient of this award will receive a plaque and a $1,000 travel grant (additional details available below).

Applying
Interested individuals shall apply through the form at the link below. The final day to submit an application for this award is June 15, 2024 at 11:59 PM CDT. If a student experiences trouble completing the online application, the supporting documents and applicant information should be sent to Andy Vance.

Students are allowed to nominate themselves or their peers.


Application Materials

  • Maximum one page essay (12pt Times New Roman font, 1.15 spacing) on involvement within PSA including:
    • Service

      • PSA Hatchery committee roles

      • PSA Hatchery volunteer (i.e. F.A.S.T Hour Moderator, new website beta tester)

      • Interpretative summary writer

      • Other PSA volunteer roles (i.e. journal reviewer, Let’s Squawk About It series, etc.)

    • Participation
      • PSA Meeting attendance

      • Publications to Poultry Science or The Journal of Applied Poultry Research

      • Other involvements with PSA (i.e. webinars, FAST Hours, etc.)

  • CV/Resume (maximum 2 pages).
  • One Letter of Recommendation from a PSA professional member (advisor, committee member, other academic or industry professionals) who can attest to the applicant’s involvement in PSA.

Application Review
After submission, the Hatchery Advisory Committee will review each submitted application and confirm that each has met the requirements of the award. Those applications meeting the requirements will be contacted with the decision (accept/decline) upon conclusion of the review process.


Note: Failure to adhere to application guidelines may result in points deduction. 

Student of the year applications will be reviewed by the Hatchery Advisory Committee and a recipient will be selected based upon the following:

  • Service to PSA – up to 5 points
  • Participation in PSA associated events – up to 3 points
  • CV/Resume – up to 3 points
  • Letter of recommendation – up to 2 points
  • Overall impression – up to 2 points

Award Funds & Plaque
Once the Selection Committee's decision has been made, the awardee will be contacted within the week and notified of the decision. The award amount is $1,000 in the form of a travel grant to be used for qualifying expenses for any conference related to poultry science of the selected student’s field of study. The grant funds will be distributed by PSA in accordance with receipts that match the original grant approval. It is imperative original receipts are kept and mailed to PSA at 4114C Fieldstone Drive Champaign, IL 61822 within 30 days of the event. A plaque will be presented to the recipient at the PSA Hatchery Business Meeting as part of the 2024 Annual Meeting in Louisville, KY.
